Barra

White shell sand runs into a cold green sea on Barra, the Hebridean island that drew Samuel Peploe and his fellow Scottish Colourists west in search of Atlantic light. Oil paint sits thick on the surface, machair grass laid down in buttery strokes of chrome green and yellow, shallows skimmed with viridian over pale cobalt. Low hills hold a violet-grey shadow beneath a flat white sky, every passage built wet into wet, colour pushed hard against colour. It belongs by a north-facing window in a reading nook, a stairwell, or a room with pale linen, where those cold greens and blown whites behave like open weather.
