Barges on the Seine

Flat-bottomed barges ride low on the Seine, their hulls stacked with cargo while the water breaks into short choppy strokes of violet and green. Louis Valtat paints the river scene with thick impasto, each mooring post and towline laid down in a single confident pass. Sunlight flattens the far bank into bands of ochre and pink. Smoke drifts from a funnel, smearing grey across the sky. The reflections double every barge in wobbled ribbons of color, and the whole surface hums with the pressure of loaded brushwork. Fauvist color and riverine subject suit a study or a hallway, anywhere that could use a working river and its honest cargo.
