Barges on the Oise

Flat-bottomed barges ride low on the Oise, their hulls dark against water the color of wet slate. Gustave Loiseau paints the working river without sentiment: cargo stacked under tarpaulins, towlines slack, smoke thinning above a far bank. Look at the brushwork in the current. Short, loaded strokes of grey-green and muted blue break where the hulls push through, and the sky above carries a bruised pearl light that only a river town in autumn gives. Rope, timber, and riveted iron are all rendered with the same unhurried touch. A study or hallway with brick, oak, or bare plaster would take this river scene gladly, its greys settling into quiet corners.
