Sugar cane fields sweep down toward a Caribbean shoreline in Barbados, B.W.I., Winter by J. E. H. MacDonald. The Group of Seven painter traded northern lakes for tropical light, and the canvas hums with it. Loaded cane carts roll along a rutted road while field workers bend among tall green stalks. Broad palms spread flat crowns against a hot sky, and the sea sits far off as a hard band of turquoise. MacDonald builds the whole scene from quick, tactile strokes, ochre earth pressed thick beneath blowsy white clouds. A sunlit choice for a kitchen, veranda reading corner, or bright hallway.
