Bankruptcy

Bare ledgers, a collapsed scale, ink spilling across the page. Balla titled this Bankruptcy, and the drawing reads like an account book caught mid-collapse, every line pulling toward the lower left corner. Crosshatching thickens where the figures fail. Weight gathers at the bottom edge. The pencil work is dense, almost metallic, and the compositional tilt gives the sheet a sense of falling that no caption needs to explain. Balla builds the ruin from pure draftsmanship: hatched shadows, smudged greys, a few darker strokes where numbers once held. Nothing is decorative here. The lines themselves seem to sag under arithmetic. It suits a study or a home office, where the subject lands with dry humor and the tonal greys sit quietly against plain walls.
