Baltic Townscape

Steeples and tiled gables gather along a crooked quay in this Baltic townscape by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, drawn with the fine tremulous line he favored across his Baltic subject matter. Look closely and the ink crosshatching builds the scene from shadow alone: slate rooftops layered in dense parallel strokes, a church spire thin as a needle against a washed grey sky, tiny chimneys and masts crowded at the waterline. Sepia and cool grey washes pool between the linework, giving the town the damp hush of evening on the coast. A study wall or reading nook suits this quiet northern harbor, especially beside bookshelves and dark wood.
