Balcic Gulf

A fishing skiff rides the shallow water of the Balcic Gulf, its hull drawn in a single dark stroke against water the color of unpolished turquoise. Constantin Artachino sets the whole scene low, so the sky does most of the talking. Sunlight breaks into pale lemon streaks along the horizon. Closer inspection shows the brushwork quick and loaded: ultramarine dragged over cerulean where the swell crests, dry white scumbled across the sail, and a hot strip of sand at the right edge where the shore heats up. Cliffs sit in violet shadow, their silhouettes softened by sea haze. The composition breathes salt and afternoon glare, the kind of light the Dobruja coast gets in late summer. Hang it where afternoon sun falls: a stairwell landing, a coastal living room, or a hallway that needs a window onto the Black Sea.
