Boats sit moored in a tight horseshoe of deep blue water, masts crossing against the glare. Balaklava. View of the city and the bay finds Pyotr Konchalovsky at his most sunlit. Whitewashed houses stack up the slope in blocks of cream and rose, their terracotta roofs catching the midday heat. Ochre cliffs close off the skyline, and a ruined fortress keeps watch from the ridge. The brushwork sits thick on the surface, cobalt dragged straight over viridian where the harbor deepens. Hung above a writing desk or in a coastal hallway, it brings salt air and hard southern light into rooms that need a horizon.
