Balaklava. Ship to the Shore

One dark-hulled ship noses toward the quay, sails slack, the harbor churned into short strokes of cobalt and viridian. Pyotr Konchalovsky kept the title plain, Balaklava, ship to the shore, and delivered exactly that arrival. The bay closes in tight. Cliffs wall off the sky behind a scatter of whitewashed houses, masts and rigging picked out in quick dark lines. He loads the paint thickly, so the hull sits nearly black against water broken into slabs of ultramarine, foam white and hard southern light. Hang the scene in a study lined with books, or an entryway where the sea meets everyone at the door.
