Nets lie heaped across the foreground, rust and ochre twine coiled on pale stone, the bay behind them one broad slab of deep blue. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the scene Balaklava. Fishing nets. Konchalovsky stacks the harbor in blocky, load-bearing strokes: masts, hulls and rigging built like masonry, thin dark lines crossing the water, whitewashed houses climbing the sunlit slope. The twine itself takes the densest paint, knots and mesh picked out in copper and sienna. It settles best where daylight moves: a west-facing study, a stairway landing, any pale-walled corner that lets the ultramarine water deepen as evening comes.
