Bakhchisaray

A slender minaret climbs above the tiled rooftops of Bakhchisaray. Pyotr Konchalovsky catches the old Tatar capital in thick, sun-warmed strokes that track every contour of the hillside. Ochre walls and terracotta roof tiles stack down the slope in dense planes of paint. Each brushstroke is laid on like masonry. Cypress and poplar spires break the geometry, and the green gorge behind holds the whole town in a wash of cool blue shadow. An entryway that gathers afternoon light, or a study lined with books, suits these dusty Crimean streets down to the last warm stone.
