Bakhchisaray

Pale stone houses climb the dry hills at Bakhchisaray, and Pyotr Konchalovsky paints them exactly so, rooftops tumbling toward a minaret under the hard white light of Crimea. Terracotta tiles burn orange against cream plaster, and a single cypress cuts a black slash down the slope. The brushwork sits thick on the surface, ochre and rose dragged side by side, shadows laid in cool violet where walls turn from the sun. It belongs in a study with leather chairs and stacked books, or a hallway that needs one window onto somewhere hotter and farther away.
