Backyard, Malta Farm, Observatory

A quiet backyard opens between low farm buildings, washing lines and scrubby grass under a wide Transvaal sky. This is Pieter Wenning at his most intimate, painting Backyard, Malta Farm, Observatory. Wenning builds the scene in short, loaded brushstrokes. Dusty greens and sun-bleached ochres carry the yard, while the whitewashed outbuildings catch a hard afternoon light. Fences lean at casual angles, and the shadows stretch long and cool across the ground. Nothing is staged. The composition feels found, recorded in oil on the spot by a painter who knew these streets. A reading nook or hallway takes it well, especially beside plain timber and linen tones.
