Backyard

Sun washes over a cluttered village backyard in Istvan Nagy's Backyard. Fences lean, coops huddle at the edge, and domestic clutter becomes serious painting. Earth browns and dusty greens carry the composition. The brushwork is blunt and unhurried, laid on thick where a sunlit wall or a patched roof demands it. Shadows pool in cool slate blue under sheds and bare shrubs, and the whole yard feels trodden by generations of feet. Nagy painted the Hungarian countryside with the patience of someone who lived in it. Hang this reproduction in a kitchen, a farmhouse hallway, or a study where honest rural scenes belong.
