Azalea

Azalea blossoms crowd the frame, petals built up in thick dabs of rose, coral and cream against a dark, leafy ground. Oleksa Novakivskyi paints the shrub close, almost at arm reach, so every cluster reads as its own small architecture of bloom. The flowers press forward out of deep green shadow. Brushwork stays loose and loaded, oil dragged wet over wet, with highlights left to sit thick on the petal edges while the foliage sinks into murky umber and forest green. Light falls unevenly, catching the topmost trusses and leaving the lower branches half swallowed by shade, a studio arrangement rather than a garden view. A sunlit breakfast room or a conservatory corner suits this subject well, anywhere with plants and morning brightness around it.
