Auxerre Cathedral

Gothic spires and flying buttresses climb above rooftops in Auxerre Cathedral, Gustave Loiseau at his most architectural. The post impressionist painter builds the church facade from short, directional strokes, letting grey stone dissolve into shafts of daylight. Stained glass glows deep cobalt behind pointed arches. Weathered limestone buttresses crosshatch the sky, their shadows pooling violet against masonry warmed with rose and ochre. Below, tiled roofs slope toward the street, where small figures pass beneath the towers. Hang it in a hallway, reading nook, or study to bring French cathedral light into an everyday room.
