Autumn. Yellow Wood

Golden crowns swallow the treetops in Autumn. Yellow wood, a forest scene by the Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky, where low light sifts through drifting leaves. Ochre and cadmium go on as thick impasto; trunks are scored in cool grey-violet; the undergrowth still holds green where summer clings. Brushwork stays visible throughout, each leaf a single dab, each shadow one broad sweep. Sun breaks between the stems, warming the ground to amber. Hang it where the afternoon comes in, a reading room or hallway with pale walls; the glow lingers as the days shorten.
