Autumn Road

Rutted earth climbs toward a pale amber sky, birches stripped to white trunks, copper leaf scattered along the verges. Autumn road by Pyotr Konchalovsky carries the chill of a Russian October in every loaded stroke. Paint sits high on the surface, laid in slablike strokes of ochre and burnt sienna that give the foliage actual thickness. Violet shadow pools in the ruts while each rise catches a last rim of low sun. Fences lean. Grass has gone to straw. A north-facing hallway, a study lined with leather chairs, an entry where boots come off after long walks, any room that smells faintly of woodsmoke.
