Autumn Landscape

Russet and copper sweep across a hillside in Autumn Landscape, George Luks at his most painterly. The Ashcan School master loads his brush with burnt sienna, ochre and russet, dragging autumn foliage into thick impasto ridges that catch the light. Bare trunks and a low slanting sun hold the composition together, all brusque energy and fall air. A study or reading nook with wood tones and leather suits this canvas of the turning year.
