Autumn in Bakony

Russet beech crowns burn along a ridge of high Hungarian woodland, the forest at the exact turn of the season. Istvan Nagy called the picture Autumn in Bakony, and the paint agrees. Loaded oil strokes in sienna and ochre build the canopy, grey trunks rising in verticals against a pale, cold sky. A rutted track drops into shadow at the lower edge, and slanting light picks out leaf litter between the roots. Nothing here is prettified. Hang it where afternoons turn amber and the rooms stay quiet, a study or a hallway lined with wood and leather, and the season carries through.
