Autumn Forest

Beech trunks rise through a floor of fallen leaves, their crowns thinned to bare late season silhouettes. Max Slevogt paints Autumn Forest as loose, gestural brushwork, each trunk a quick stroke of grey and violet against the canopy. Ochre, russet and burnt sienna pile up where the light drops through. The undergrowth dissolves into raw canvas in places, letting the ground itself read as pale mist between the trees. Broken color and rapid handling give the whole scene the feel of a walk taken at dusk, breath visible, boots crunching. A reading nook, a hallway, or a study with dark shelving would hold these warm forest tones well.
