Autumn Evening

Autumn evening closes over a Crimean valley in this work by Konstantin Bogaevsky. Smoke drifts from low rooftops. The day is ending, and the land knows it. Russet and umber wash across the hillsides while the sky cools to violet and slate. Bare trees thin out along a ridge, their branches drawn in fine dark strokes. A pale sun, already low, leaves a band of ochre light along the horizon where the mountains go blue grey. Bogaevsky builds the scene in layered oil glazes, so the shadows seem to hold depth you can look into. Suits a study or reading nook, anywhere the light fades early and quiet suits the hour.
