Autumn Crocuses

Purple crocus petals lift out of dark earth in Felix Vallotton Autumn Crocuses, a flower study built from flat color and unflinching line. The blooms crowd the foreground, mauve and violet against a backdrop of muted greens and rusty ochre. Vallotton, the Swiss-born painter absorbed into the Paris Nabis circle, treats each petal as a shape to be cut and set down, its edge traced in a darker contour. Soft interior light flattens the scene, so the crocuses read almost like a woodcut in paint, bold and quiet at once. Slender leaves tilt across the composition, some yellowed at the tips, marking the season. This botanical subject suits a reading nook or a bedroom wall where calm, close-up nature is welcome.
