Autumn. Birches.

Slender birch trunks cut through drifting gold, bark scored with black chevrons. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the scene plainly, Autumn. Birches, and let the trees carry the whole argument. Ochre and amber foliage piles against a pale sky, laid on in loaded dabs of oil that still hold the ridge of the brush. The bare wood stays cool, lead white amid all that fire. Below, the ground burns russet and umber. Shed leaves pool in a deep carpet around the roots. It settles into a study or reading nook, where the honeyed range warms bookshelves and panelling across the grey half of the year.
