August Noon

Golden grass lies flattened under a bleached sky, the whole slope holding still at the height of day. Guy Rose named the scene August Noon, and the light keeps his word. Short, loaded brushstrokes stack ochre over straw yellow, every dry blade lit to the tip. A grove of eucalyptus crowds one edge, silver leaves dropping a pool of blue-violet shade that reads nearly solid against the glare. Heat haze softens the far ridge to a pale apricot line. It belongs in a sunroom or stairway landing, anywhere real daylight falls, where that painted shimmer can answer the sun coming through the glass.
