A convivial tavern scene unfolds across the picture plane, Aubrey Beardsley at his most wry. At The Relton Arms gathers its figures under low beams, glasses raised, faces caught in sly profile. Beardsley renders it all in sweeping black ink linework, flat washes of solid dark against bare paper, the crosshatching dense as velvet in the corners. Faces are masks of knowing amusement, garments reduced to elegant curves and hard graphic silhouette. Every contour carries the Decadent bite of the 1890s fin de siecle. Hang it in a study, a bar nook, or a dim hallway where wit and shadow belong together.
