A lone figure halts at the first corner, skirts sweeping the pavement as the street bends out of sight. At the First Coner shows Aubrey Beardsley in full command of his wicked line. Black ink pools into solid masses against bare paper while hairline strokes trace folded fabric, a gloved hand, the pale geometry of a lamplit wall. The discipline is Japanese, the mood fin de siecle, every crosshatch set with deliberate intent. Best placed in a study or a dim hallway, where the strong black shapes read across a room and reward a closer look at the drawing itself.
