At the Coast of Normandy

Cliffs drop sheer into cold green water, and the tide works at their base. Gustave Loiseau set this Normandy coast down in quick, loaded strokes of oil, the kind he used all over northern France. Pale limestone stacks up in layered bands, patched with scrub and thin grass. Foam runs white along the shore while low cumulus banks gather over the Channel. His broken brushwork churns the water surface into flecks of teal, slate, and cream, and the horizon sits high, leaving the beach room to breathe. A seaside reading room, a coastal hallway, or a study with a north window would suit it well.
