A pale tower climbs above slate rooftops, telescope domes dark against a violet northern sky. Ferdynand Ruszczyc paints the Astronomical Observatory of Vilnius University as a study in cold light and stone. The architecture reads in muted greys and umber, plaster walls pitted by weather, lead roofs catching a low sun. Bare trees cross the foreground in thin black strokes, their branches etched against the building facade. Ruszczyc loads the sky with heavy impasto, violet bleeding into grey where clouds thin near the horizon. A lone figure, small as a comma, moves along the base of the tower.
