Aspidistra

An aspidistra takes center stage in this still life by Samuel Peploe, its broad leaves fanning out from a plain pot in bold, deliberate brushwork. Peploe builds the plant from flat planes of deep green, each leaf edged and veined with darker strokes so the surfaces read almost sculptural. The pot sits on a bare table, light falling from one side, the background kept to loose blocks of muted color. Nothing decorative, nothing fussy. Suits a study or reading nook where something quiet and structured belongs.
