Aspen and Spruce

Aspen trunks, pale as bone, thread upward through a stand of dark spruce in Aspen and Spruce, a forest interior Maria Yakunchikova composed in hushed greens and cooling grays. Bone-pale bark, scarred with charcoal diamonds, climbs the left of the frame while small round leaves flicker overhead. Conifers behind hold a nearly black mass of needles. Low light enters sideways, silvering one trunk and leaving the moss below in shadow. A quiet study, a hallway between doorways, or a reading nook layered with linen and weathered wood would suit this stretch of northern woodland.
