Ashram (Ceylon)

Palms rise over a quiet retreat in Ceylon, the subject of Ashram, painted by Nicholas Roerich during his travels through the East. A hermitage half-hidden among fronds and low stone steps opens onto still water. Deep greens and warm earth tones carry the composition. Roerich layers tempera-like color into the foliage, letting light pool on a broad leaf in the foreground while the sanctuary dissolves into humid haze beyond.
