Artichoke

Bracts overlap like roof shingles, grey with bloom, each tip brushed with wine purple. At the heart sits the artichoke. Fujishima Takeji painted it in the Japanese yoga manner. A compact still life in oil. Loaded strokes catch light along every ridge against a flat buttery umber background. Sage runs into deep forest green where shadow gathers. The whole form sits a little off center, a flower head waiting to open. Set in a kitchen or dining room, it becomes a promise of dinner. A cook would pause over it on the way to the stove.
