Art Forms in Nature 76

A horsetail stem stands joint upon joint, every node sending out a ring of needle branches in flawless symmetry. Karl Blossfeldt caught it at magnification for Art Forms in Nature 76. The tonal scale runs from charcoal stem to pale ground, each hairline branch sharp against the light. Fluted joints, symmetrical whorls, a vertical logic nearer to architecture than to gardening: silver gelatin monochrome at high magnification. Nothing is cropped for effect; the plant itself supplies the geometry. It suits a study or entryway, where strong verticals pull the eye upward, and sits happily beside dark wood, plain plaster, or the quiet corner of a reading nook.
