Spiky bracts radiate from a packed central core, sharp tips silhouetted against a plain grey ground. Karl Blossfeldt recorded the bloom in plate 55 of Art Forms in Nature. Magnified far beyond life size, the dried specimen turns botanical detail into architecture. Papery scales overlap like roof tiles, fine hairs catch light along every edge, and tonal values slide from deep charcoal shadow to bone white highlight. Shallow focus keeps the front ranks crisp while the rear dissolves into soft haze.
