A dried flowering branch of the mallow family stands against plain paper, every pale petal and fuzzy stem rendered at magnification. Karl Blossfeldt photographed his plant subjects against neutral ground so the architecture of each bloom could carry the whole frame. Here the mallow opens in a loose spray, papery blossoms at different stages, from tight bud to fully spread flower, the calyx and bristles as crisp as an engraving. Tonal greys range from near-white petals to deep shadow at the stalk, giving the image weight and dimension. It suits a study, a hallway, or anywhere that rewards a slow look.
