Art Forms in Nature 111

Dried seed pods of a scabious plant press against the light, their papery cups arranged in a ring. Karl Blossfeldt photographed the specimen at magnification for Art Forms in Nature 111, turning a dead flower into geometry. Every radial line is visible. The cups overlap like scale armor, each one edged with a fine fringe of hairs that the large format negative records without softness. Grey tones carry the whole image, from the pale membrane of the pods to the near black of the hollow centers. Nothing is retouched. The plant built this symmetry on its own, and the camera simply held it still long enough to be counted. Hang it where concentration happens: a study wall, a reading nook, a hallway that needs one clear vertical note.
