Arm of Lucretia

A bare forearm rises from the lower edge, veins traced in fine ink lines and the hand half clenched, as if caught between gesture and grip. That is the whole drama of Arm of Lucretia by Albrecht Durer, a study reduced to a single fragment of the body. Durer built the form with dense parallel hatching over a wash of warm ochre, each stroke following the swell of muscle so the skin seems to turn under light. Tendons pull taut at the wrist, knuckles catch a pale highlight, and shadow pools deep in the crook of the elbow. Nothing is decorative here. Every line does anatomical work. A piece like this earns a quiet study or a hallway, something with plain walls and good raking light where the hatching can be read up close.
