Masts crowd the sky in a lattice of spars and rigging, ships in port lying bow to bow along the Arkhangelsk quays. Pyotr Konchalovsky gives the harbor its full working heft. Oil sits thick across the surface, hulls built from slabbed strokes of tar brown, ochre and weathered red. Grey green water carries broken reflections of the fleet, while a pale northern sky presses down flat over warehouses and mastheads. Every loaded brushstroke adds weight to the timber.
