Arbutus Tree

An arbutus tree leans out over dark coastal ground, its smooth trunk peeling from rust red into pale cream and olive green. Emily Carr paints the tree close and low, as if you have stopped mid-path to look up at it. Deep evergreen foliage presses in around the trunk, thick with wet forest shadow. Carr works the surface heavily, pushing paint into ridges and furrows that make the bark feel carved rather than brushed. Cold blues and grey greens wash through the canopy, broken by flashes of the trunk warm orange against the gloom. Everything here reads like the BC rainforest itself: dense, damp, alive. Hang it in a study or reading nook where its deep greens can settle.
