Apples

Apples fill the foreground in a heap of reds and golds, each skin built from deliberate, buttery impasto. Pyotr Konchalovsky paints the humble subject at monumental scale, rounding every sphere with loaded color. Crimson flushes into orange where light strikes, while shadowed sides sink toward deep green and bruised purple. Short, curved strokes stack into solid orbs that press forward off the tabletop, the brushwork left plainly visible. A dry brown stem holds its own quiet note against all that ripeness. A dining room gains an anchor from fruit painted this boldly; in a kitchen or entryway, the Russian still life settles in among wood, linen and copper.
