Apples sit in a heap on a plain tabletop, five or six of them tumbling against one another in a still life by Felix Vallotton. The fruit carries weight. Skin turns from bruised green to a deep flushed red, each apple modeled with a single confident highlight and a shadow that grounds it firmly to the surface. Behind them the background stays flat and unapologetic, a muted field that pushes the round forms forward the way Nabis painters liked. A kitchen table, a country pantry, a quiet corner of a dining room. Somewhere apples are still counted this way.
