Apples against the blue sky

Apples, sun-swollen and dense as summer itself, hold the foreground while pure color fills everything behind them. Pyotr Konchalovsky built the still life Apples against the blue sky with orchard-side directness. The paint sits thick. Each fruit is built from loaded strokes, madder red over gold, green shadow tucked at the stem. Highlights lie on so heavily they catch real light. Behind the pile the sky is one flat sweep of cobalt, nothing to distract the eye from the fruit. A sunlit kitchen or a dining room with a scrubbed table would suit it, somewhere food is handled daily and color is welcome.
