Apple Trees

Apple trees crowd the picture plane, crowns heaped with white blossom flushed pink. Pyotr Konchalovsky paints an orchard at the height of spring, every branch loaded, sky flickering between the boughs. Thick oil strokes build the scene: trunks in bruised umber and violet, grass broken into flecks of emerald, petals laid on with a loaded brush until they catch real light. Cool blue shadows run beneath the branches and anchor every crown in solid earth. Set in a dining room or sunroom, the flowering boughs hold winter at bay; morning light meets petal light and the whole room turns to May.
