Apple Tree in Bloom

Blossom buries every branch of the apple tree in this spring garden scene by Pyotr Konchalovsky, the Russian painter who approached flowering trees with almost physical appetite. Konchalovsky stacks cream and blush impasto until the petals carry real weight, each cluster laid on as thickly as fruit. A knotted umber trunk, young green leaves and a rough timber fence hold the flowering crown against hard cobalt sky, short confident strokes keeping the whole canopy in motion. A breakfast nook, stair landing or quiet study gains the whole mood of an orchard in late April, fresh as the morning the buds broke.
