About this work

Anzac from Gaba Tepe

Cliffs of the Dardanelles rise from a steel-colored sea in Anzac from Gaba Tepe by George Washington Lambert. The headland is seen from Turkish ground, looking toward the ridge the Anzacs held. Pale chalk slopes carry the light. Trench lines score the hillside in faint dark threadwork, and small boats dot the water below. Lambert builds the terrain in short, deliberate brushstrokes, ochre and olive against cold blue water, sky scrubbed thin above the ridge. A study, library, or hallway with a taste for military history is where this belongs.
