Antirrhinums (Snapdragons)

Snapdragons crowd the frame, their hooded blossoms in crimson and rose stacked along tall green stems. Antirrhinums by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale turns a garden border into a close botanical study. The flowers open toward the light, petals brushed in deep pink shading to coral at the mouth, leaves rendered in cool sage with visible brushwork along the veins. Brickdale, known for her Pre-Raphaelite detail, gives each spike its own weight: some lean, some stand rigid, one drops a spent bloom onto the soil below.
