Animal Motif for a Picture Book

A leaping beast fills the sheet, its body reduced to a handful of confident curves. Koloman Moser drew this animal motif for a picture book, and the line still carries the energy of the original gesture. Ink sits dense and black against the pale ground, every contour doing double duty as outline and shadow. The haunches compress into circles, the tail whips into a single looping stroke, and small hatched marks suggest fur along the spine. Flat color blocks in muted terracotta and moss green hold the creature against an open field, a geometry that owes everything to the Vienna Secession and its taste for ordered ornament. A nursery, a child reading nook, or a hallway shelf of storybooks would suit this drawing well.
