Andante (Sonata of the Pyramids)

Pyramids rise in slow, stepped procession across the picture plane, each tier drawn with the patient logic of musical notation. The Andante sonata of Ciurlionis turns monuments into rhythm. The Lithuanian composer-painter builds his Egyptian forms in pale ochre and muted sand, planes shifting from warm cream to grey umber as the triangles recede. Fine contour lines trace each edge like a pencil score, and the sky above stays quiet, a hushed field that lets the geometry breathe. Shadow gathers in narrow bands at the bases. A study, a hallway, or a reading room gains gravity and calm from such measured architecture.
