Ancient Pskov

Whitewashed fortress walls hold the horizon in Ancient Pskov, Nicholas Roerich painted homage to the medieval Russian town where his family traced deep roots. Onion domes rise behind stone ramparts under a broad sky. Muted greens and earthen ochres carry the hillsides, while the fortress masonry reads block by block in cool grey and bone. Church domes catch pale light against drifting clouds, and small figures on the roads give the ramparts their human scale. Every brushstroke keeps the tempera-like flatness Roerich favored in his Russian series. A study wall, hallway, or reading room with wood and linen tones suits this quiet northern subject well.
